Research and study in Het Nieuwe Instituut with Flip Nieuwpoort

We first met Flip in 2017 when he bought his first pair of Altona's in our store. After this we saw Flip several times in the store and soon the conversations were about work, architecture and inspiration. That is why we asked Flip to tell us more about what inspires him and to show us Het Nieuwe Instituut on a beautiful Sunday morning.

Het Nieuwe Instituut

Changes in society call for new understandings of architecture and its practice. Het Nieuwe Instituut explores and showcases emerging forms of practice for architects, and by doing so aims to open up the discipline to new challenges and intervention strategies. Its national archive for architecture and urban planning provides an insight into 150 years of Dutch architecture and urbanism.

Tell us a bit about your background and how you found your way in the world of architecture?

I grew up in Schiedam and my father was also trained as an architect, he worked for a housing cooperative. From an early age, we drove with my parents to construction sites on weekends to look at housing projects. During my studies I worked at various architectural firms and I was active as an Archiguide in Rotterdam. Immediately after graduating, I started my own agency together with Ben Luteijn. We took on all the work we could get, ranging from hospitality and retail interiors to drawing dormer windows. By tackling everything I mainly came to know what I do not like and what I cannot do and I know where my strengths lie. In 2019 I started the new architecture company 3Hoog.

What does Het Nieuwe Instituut mean to you?

During my studies I lived in Rotterdam and I still am. I have always had a preference for books, so I can often be found in the library of Het Nieuwe Instituut. The beautiful view over the Museum Park and the endless source of information in the architecture archive are inspiring to me.

I also run an average of twice a week past Het Nieuwe Instituut. I really enjoy the sports and dance schools that, due to the corona crisis, now give their lessons outside between the arcade. I hope this continues to happen in the future.

Where else do you get your inspiration from?

Besides (architecture) books and the trips I make, it is also my own city of Rotterdam. In various Dutch cities you see many new buildings and urban development, but what makes Rotterdam so unique that you can see projects such as the to be build Cool- and Baan-Tower in the middle of the city. The Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (see photo above) is another good example of this. I think this is exactly why Rotterdam is so inspiring to me, it is the possibilities that still exist to build and develop.

What are the major changes you see in architecture and how do you expect it to develop?

Now that m2 prices are rising faster and faster, people will probably live smaller. I think the developments in cities like London and New York are a good example of what awaits us here. I am not opposed to this, but I do think it is important that the city remains a mix of different incomes. Matters like social housing must therefore be properly arranged.
