Playlist #08 by Philip Powel

Philip Powel "the Swiss knife" from the Rotterdam Hip-Hop and Jazz scene has compiled a playlist for us. The playlist consists of tracks from artists who have performed at Jazzclub BIRD or whom he would like to have seen perform there. They are what Philip and Bird stand for: a mix of jazz and hip-hop, hybrid and eclectic.

Since the early 2000s, Philip has been active in many forms in the musical and cultural sector. Co-founder of, among others, the Black Soil International Hip-hop Film Festival (first hip-hop film festival in Europe) and the CrimeJazz literary cross-over stage evenings where spoken word and hip-hop met each other.

Hip-Hop led Philip to jazz, which resulted in the co-founding of jazz club BIRD and his role as artistic director of BIRD. A place where everything comes together and where stories (musical) are told and made. Named after the American saxophonist Charlie "Bird" Parker, BIRD is the place where multiple musical movements come together.

Stage, club and restaurant BIRD is located under the Hofbogen in Rotterdam and offers a program full of jazz, but also related music movements such as soul, latin and funk, hip hop, afrobeat, and electronics. As well as jazz-related art disciplines such as performance poetry, film and visual arts. The kitchen at BIRD is a reflection of the city of Rotterdam: unpolished, honest and a crossroads of styles and cultures.

In 2018, Philip received the highly respectable Laurens Medal for his contribution to the Rotterdam musical and cultural sector. As writer and journalist Saul van Stapele described: "He received this prize for his special power: connecting. Styles and cultures, music and people, and making something out of nothing".

There is a good reason why we call Philip a "Swiss Knife". In addition to Bird's artistic programming, Philip is also involved in the newest Rotterdam Mavis coktail bar and the new Ruyzdael clothing lifestyle brand.
